The expression of my thoughts has always been important to me. Right from my childhood, I found it necessary to bring my thoughts out in one or the other form. Being a film enthusiast, I always thought films to be a fascinating way to express a thought as it can cater any idea to a broad audience in a way they like to see. My wish to try this form of art came true when I met some like-minded film enthusiasts during my undergraduate. Each of us had a unique skill but lacked resources, which made us do something about it as we all wanted to work towards this.

How did it start?

Our motto was to create a platform for students interested in filmmaking to meet, share, and make films. This was when we launched a Short film making club named - Moving Frames. We found that film making helps an engineer express their thoughts and helps them learn the art of presentation, storytelling, which has become an integral part of today's world.

What we do?

Moving frames has produced five short films with almost zero budget for each movie till now. This budget constraint made us more creative in delivering a quality film without compromising the story's core gist. The films produced have screened at some famous film carnivals and bagged awards for our institute at various national competitions as well. The club also arranged numerous film-making workshops where the experts in the field have delivered lectures on various aspects of film-making such as VFX, character building, sound design, etc. The club’s Brainstorming sessions were the most electrifying part for me, as endless discussions, interesting storyboards making, screenplay sketching, and idea-sharing took place, which usually concluded with a sense of satisfaction and excitement.

Impact

Our club was the first club in our institute that focused on documentary and filmmaking. Although it was an engineering institute, we got a tremendous response from students. In the first six months, our team expanded from eight students to 56 students. We provoked a culture of film making in students, and as a result, many students started to make short films. Due to our workshops on cinematography and film editing, student bodies that were organizing different technical events started to make promotional/branding videos for taking the events onto the next level. Through our network, we managed to invite many Bollywood filmmakers to launch their films in our institute.

Our club was featured in regional news paper for our work in Marathi films
We had the opportunity to show our film-Bebas to Mr. Ashutosh Gowariker, one of Bollywood's best directors. We felt great when he was impressed with our work.

How has it helped me?

This club has given me some remarkable experiences which have helped me to grow along with its process. I have worked as a Foley artist, sound designer, art director, and actor in various films we made. Playing a lead role in a few movies made me learn how to inculcate an idea/character that is not originally my own and deliver it convincingly on the screen. It helped me broaden my perspective on understanding different ideas, perspectives and thoughts, which helps me in the role-playing in user research.

What is its future?

We further plan to take this platform to a more massive crowd by creating a Linkedin like social media setup just for ammature filmmakers and film enthusiasts worldwide to connect and help share their films and ideas beyond their cultures and countries.
